A Virginia Farm

Located in the Piedmont region of central Virginia with distant views to the Blue Ridge Mountains, this working farm unfolds across 500+ acres of lush rolling hills and includes productive fruit and vegetable crops as well as sheep, pigs, chickens, and Piedmontese cows. At the core of the property, a house built in the late 1800’s was restored and expanded in the late 1990’s, which initiated the creation of a master plan for the 500 acres as well as a series of landscape projects adjacent to the residence. Improvements to the landscape included the addition of a series of porches and a dining terrace, a kitchen herb garden, a pool side seating terrace with a Wisteria covered pergola, and several planting projects to lend structure and interest to existing garden spaces. Ongoing landscape projects include the assessment of circulation patterns—both vehicular and pedestrian—as well as the creation of new garden spaces that work within the framework of the inherited garden layout. With the 15 year old master plan in hand as reference, new areas for agricultural and recreational opportunities are always being imagined, evaluated, and developed.

Rather than allowing it to serve simply as a backdrop for the built environment, Gerrit’s work strives to bring elements of the natural world to the core of his projects. Whether through the subtle framing of a distant view along an entry drive or the creation of a new outdoor garden ‘room’ immediately accessible from one’s house, Gerrit Goss Landscape Architecture and Design lends order to—and enhances—previously overlooked exterior spaces and natural features in a way that compliments and expands how we live outdoors today.
